On the 20th of March the Mykolaiv WoA had a special English Discussion Club dedicated to the European Actionweek Against Racism. In the first part of the meeting all the participants had a chance to learn some theory on the topic of racism and watch some striking videos, while the second part was more practical. Everyone took part in a role game, in which they experienced being in the shoes of those who often suffer from intolerant behaviour. They were asked to harm and were harmed. After that we had a reflection of their feelings and finished with making each other compliments holding a poor bird which was supposed to start feeling better. The thing is that this owl became the biggest surprise of that day. It was a cute present from one of our visitors. She told us that this bird was discriminated by a cat and that is why she wanted to give it to us.
Our leaders were Anna H. and Nastia O.
We had 14 participants.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on the 21st of March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid pass laws. Proclaiming the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
