English Book Club!

Mykolaiv Window on America Center had the English Book Club with a Peace Corps volunteer Melanie Graham on the 2nd of April.
Our participants discussed a book "The Gioconda Smile" by A. Huxley (1922). This short story unfolds the exploits of one Mr. Hutton, and his balancing of wife, lover, and possible sexual conquest.  He employs his particularly educated and intellectual style to remind you that he comes from this socialite class, and frequently writes himself as a character, critiquing from the inside. This style is full of complicated language as well as allegories to prose and classic, frequently in French. Despite the possibility of inaccessibility in today’s modern audience, the language helps to immerse the reader in a bygone culture that spent countless hours reading and studying. Huxley’s characters are nothing if not well educated.
5 participants took part in this English Book Club.
