Mykolaiv Window on America Center had the English Book Club with a Peace Corps volunteer Melanie Graham on the 29th of October.
Our participants discussed a book "The legend of sleeping hollow" by W. Irving. This short story about the Ichabod Crane, is a Yankee schoolteacher who lives in Sleepy Hollow, a Dutch enclave on the Hudson River. A suggestible man, Crane believed the ghost stories and tales of witchcraft he had heard and read. He was particularly impressed by the tale of a spectral headless horseman said to haunt the area. Crane was also mercenary; he courts Katrina Van Tassel mostly because she was the daughter of a rich farmer and was expected to receive a large inheritance. Abraham Van Brunt is Crane’s jealous rival, a local favourite and a rash horseman who often played tricks on the schoolmaster. Late one night as Ichabod Crane rided home from a party at Katrina’s home, he was suddenly frightened by a ghostlike headless horseman. The ghost pursued him and hurled at him a round object that he took to be a head but was later revealed to have been a pumpkin. The schoolmaster was never seen in Sleepy Hollow again.
