Mykolaiv Window on America Center held a regular English Speaking Club on the 20th of January.
Dmytro Burdenko (FLEX alumnus 2017-2018) was our leader.
Our visitors discussed the topic "Media literacy” with our speaker. The goal of this Speaking club was to improve civil media literacy and therefore improve the quality of life for individuals and the democratic process itself. We discussed the concept of media literacy as a whole, what it comprises and how we can improve our media literacy and critical thinking. He described the four important skills that are key to comprehending and analyzing the media and discussed which ones are already in use by the audience members and which ones needed improvement. We also evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and modern media and how they complement one another. Finally, we discussed the philosophical problem of censorship and control of media, which sparked a long discussion among the participants.
